GM David Smerdon speaks on non-Chess stuff ......

Yes, the bi-annual Chess Olympiad is on, yes, Australian Open team is doing well, yes, the Women's team is holding on, and yes, His Alienness Kirsan has retained the Fide presidency (Boo! Boo!) but if you want to ignore those stuff, here is an interview with Australian 4th GM, David Smerdon to get your minds off chess (and a photo of him bald!!!)

After Rd 7, Andrew Brown is leading with 5.5/7 and three others (Chris Wallis, Gene Nakauchi and Moulthun Ly) breathing down his neck with 5/7. At this stage, the surprise is Junta Ikeda. Not sure what is wrong. Do not wish to say anything without taking away anything from those who had a good games against him.

Rounds 8 and 9 tomorrow and a close finish is predicted. Seemingly (appearances are always deceptive in chess), Chris Wallis has the easier draw in the last two rounds. Critical is Rd 8 and the clash between Moulthun vs Junta and Andrew and Gene. Andrew also has a very tough last round against very fast improving Anton Smirnov. But he has a postponed game in hand against PengYu.

Round 8
Ly - Ikeda
Chen - Smirnov
Brown - Nakauchi
Grigg - Muller
Wallis - Wang

Round 9
Wang - Ly
Muller - Wallis
Nakauchi - Grigg
Smirnov - Brown
