5A Application and Selection for Certain Junior Events
5A.1 This clause applies to applications for selection for FIDE junior events such as the
World Youth Championships that permit more than one person to be endorsed by their
national federation to enter that event (“a FIDE junior event”).
5A.2 A person will not be endorsed by the ACF to enter a FIDE junior event unless that
person has applied for selection under this By-law.
5A.3 Before voting under clause 7 on applications for selection for a FIDE junior event
the selectors are to determine, in respect of each applicant for selection, if that applicant
is strong enough to play in the event.
5A.4 Each selector is to make that determination within a time fixed by the Selection Co-
ordinator when the information is provided to the selectors under clause 6.
5A.5 The Selection Co-ordinator is immediately to inform an applicant, who is
determined by a majority of the selectors not to be strong enough to play in the event, of
that determination.
5A.6 A determination under clause 5A.3 and 5A.4 is not subject to appeal under clause 9.
5A.7 The remaining applicants for selection are to be ranked in accordance with clause 7.
5A.8 The applicant ranked first is to be endorsed by the ACF as its official selection
entitled to receive free accommodation and other benefits provided by the host federation
under the FIDE rules applying to the event.
5A.9 Each other ranked applicant is entitled to endorsement by the ACF as an official
selection to enter the event at his or her own expense.

2010 AusJCL International Junior and Johns-Putra JETS Selection Applications
Dear All Juniors, Parents and Chess friends (and cheerleaders),
It seems I have volunteered my services to act as the AusJCL Selections Administrator for 2010. And it seems that I will also be handling the Johns-Putra JETS applications as well.
I am not taking over the AusJCL website and so will not be posting information there. If and when a suitable webmaster is "volunteered" I will liaise with her/him. However, in the interim, whatever is posted here will also be posted on ChessChat in the thread, AusJCL International Junior and Johns-Putra JETS Selection Applications (see here).
I will try to be more forthcoming this year with information on Selections and will post "I don't know" if I really don't know. I will probably not answer queries on ChessChat not engage in extended discussions on ChessChat. If there is any queries, I can be contacted at wengnian.siow8@gmail.com.
Thank you.

2010 Australian Chess Championships_Interesting Junior Games_4
This is the last instalment in my presentation of interesting junior games fromt he Australian Championships/Major. I have saved the best for the last. here are two games involving Queensland junior Alex Stahnke. The first game, a KID, won the admiration of judge GM Ian Rogers for the brilliancy prize in the Australian Major. I believe that someone somewhere commented that GM Rogers consider this the best game of the entire Championships. Truly remarkable performance. And btw, Alex Stahnke went on to Hobart, Tasmania to the 2010 Australian Juniors and successfully captured the Australian U14 title.

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Final Results and Standings
I guess I have to apologise to the organisers of the Australian Juniors since they posted the results last night around 9 pm. Well Done! And Congrats on an excellent job especially keeping chess friends, parents and chess juniors updated via the ChessChat ShoutBox.
It also looks like I got it wrong in the result of the Girls U18/U16. Also much earlier, I miscalculated and did not factor in Yuan Yi in the fight for the U16. The consolation is that the finals were much more exciting. My heart goes out to 7 year old Noah Gong who plays in my club, Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club Chess Club, losing in an armageddon game to an illegal move. In any event this is what the organisers posted on the playoff:
Australian Junior Champions are:
U18 FM Bobby Cheng
U16 IM-elect James Morris
U14 Alex Stahnke
U12 Andrew Pan
U10 Peter Wallmueller
U8 Ethan Lim
GU18 Leteisha Simmonds
GU16 Abbie Kanagarajah
GU14 Megan Setiabudi
GU12 Savithri Narenthran
GU10 Kashish Christian
GU8 Yuvini Perera***
Congratulations to all the title winners and Congratulations to all who lost the title playoffs. Participating in the playoffs mean you are already a champion!!!

***I will enquire and await the arbiters' and organiser's decision to award a title to the only participant in the division. Without the benefit of an explanation, it does seem to be an incongruity!
Title playoffs today:And the title winners are:
Ethan Lim defeated Noah Gong after a mighty battle for the Under 8s (two draws in rapid, 1-1 in blitz and Ethan won the "armageddon" decider by illegal move.)
Leteisha Simmonds defeated Abbie Kanagarajah 2-0 in the who-gets-what playoff for GU18/GU16 meaning Leteisha is GU18 champion and Abbie is GU16 champion. Leteisha had three playoffs at this tournament and won them all!
James Morris defeated Yi Yuan 2-0 for the Under 16 in a playoff that was very challenging to organise in time given the length of James's game with Andrew Brown and James' airport schedule.
Australian Junior Champions are:
U18 FM Bobby Cheng
U16 IM-elect James Morris
U14 Alex Stahnke
U12 Andrew Pan
U10 Peter Wallmueller
U8 Ethan Lim
GU18 Leteisha Simmonds
GU16 Abbie Kanagarajah
GU14 Megan Setiabudi
GU12 Savithri Narenthran
GU10 Kashish Christian
GU8 Yuvini Perera***
Congratulations to all the title winners and Congratulations to all who lost the title playoffs. Participating in the playoffs mean you are already a champion!!!

2010 NSW Australia Day Weekender_Day 2
My apologies for the delayed post. I had to get the Australian Juniors wrap-up out of the way first and I got tired after all that was finished.
In any event, it should be clear by now (if not see here for full results) that IM George Xie has won the 2010 NSW Australian Day Weekender with 7/7. George is continuing his great form from the Australian Championships.
The top performing junior was Max Illingworth with 5.5/7, no surprise there! Max played George in Rd 6 but could not defeat George. Max was one of three in joint second (with Dr Jason Chan and Gareth Charles). A group of four ex-juniors (Tomek Rej, Neil Wright, Blair Mandla, Nick Chernih) shared the 5th placing on 5/7 with 4 others. The next junior to share a prize was Benjamin Cheung (4.5/7), sharing in the U1800-1600 rating joint 2nd prize. Shi Dawen (4/7) shared equal first in the rating prize in the U1600-1400 division and Wan Kinto shared in a five-way tie for the 3rd prize in the same rating division. Bernard Chau sprung upsets galore to get the U1400 rating division 1st prize. Lastly, Thomas Zhou shared in the U1250 rating division first prize with 3/7.
Results for Rd 6
Note: as reported in the comment to previous report, the Chau brothers did very well in Rd 4, Adrian defeating David Castor and Bernard drawing with Andrew Bird. However, they could not continue their form the next morning.

My son had a tournament he would rather forget with a disastrous 6-move loss in Rd 3. Sigh! [No prize money yet! (maybe I should have sent him for golf? tennis? :) :) :))] But he kept his cool to grind out a win in Rd 5 forcing his lower-rated opponent to blunder in time trouble. Important lesson! That's the end of his tournaments for the March ACF ratings. Wonder whether he will make it over 1400 and be eligible to play in the Doeberl Major.

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Final Round
The Final Round began at 9 am.
Peter Wallmueller has won his game and with that the U10 title. Congrats!
Ethan Lim drew and is now going into playoff for U8 title with Noah Gong.
Andrew Pan won again and has scored 11/11!!! Tremendous!!!
Alex Stahnke defeated Kevin Tan to take the U14 title (conditional upon Bobby's battle for U18 and U16 titles). Congrats to Alex!!!
Bobby Cheng - Sam Dalton (Sam a pawn up in endgame) and Andrew Brown - IM-elect James Morris (Andrew is a pawn up) is going down right to the wire.
That's all folks. I have to go out now! Check out ChessChat (Shoutbox) (here) for latest.
[AEST 9:25 pm}
As usual in all the tournaments in Australia in my experience, there has been no posting of full results. I am sure the organisers are busy but then in these days of electronic media where there is instantaneous transmission of information, our expectations increases exponentially.
Sorry that was my rant for the day.
Update:
From what I can gather after scrolling through 27 pages of chat on ChessChat's Shoutbox, we have the youngest ever Australian junior Champion at the grand young age of 12 years old, Bobby Cheng, adding another title to the one from last year. Congratulations on a tremendous performance of 10/11 (+8 =2 -0)!!!
IM-elect James Morris played off against Yuan Yi for U16 title and I believe James has won it (not confirmed). Congrats!!!
It looks like Alex Stahnke has won the U14 title with 6/11.
Andrew Pan won the U12 title with perfect 11/11!!! Tremendous performance and may be the first ever in Australia.
Peter Wallmueller won the U10 title. Congrats!!!
Noah and Ethan played off for the U8 but I have no inkling the result. ???
Abbie Kanagarajah had to play-off against Leteisha Simmonds for the U18/U16 titles and I believe (subject to confirmation) Abbie has defeated Leteisha and thus winning the Australian Girls Title. Leteisha gets the U16 title.
According to my calculations, Megan Setiabudi has won the U14 title (again subject to confirmation).
Savithri Narenthran has won the u12 title, also with a perfect 9/9 score. Tremendous performance and Congratulations!!!
Kashish Christian won the U10 title.
Thanks for following my daily wrap-up of the Australian Juniors 2010.
Questions: Where is the 2011 Australian Juniors going to be held? Any important news from the AusJCL AGM? Can any reader enlighten?

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Rd 10_Results
In the U18 Girls, Abbie Kanagarajah and Leteisha Simmonds won to maintain first (7.5/8) and second (7/8) placing going into the last round (Rd 9). Megan Setiabudi won also to come third (6/8). And that is also how the U18, U16 and U14 titles may pan out.
The U12 Girls had a first-place getter who was maintaining a picket-fence score and today Savithri Narenthran won again to make it 8/8. Excellent!!! However, her rival, Grace Alvares lost to Denise Lim and both are now on 6/8. This means the U12 Australian girls Champion for 2010 is Savithri Narenthran!!! Congratulations!!! Grace has to play Savithri tomorrow in thelast round while Denise plays Grace Shan. Hmmmm! It looks like Denise has the easier pairing and thus may come second ahead of Grace Alvares. Kashsish Christian also won today while her two rivals, Hannah Derwent and Grace Shan both lost. This means Kashish Christian is Australian U10 Girls Champion for 2010!!! Congratulations!!! As mentioned, Grace Shan plays Denise while Hannah plays Kashish tomorrow in the last round.
What about the U12 Open? Do we also know the 2010 U12 Champion? It looks like the result is also known. Andrew pan won his 10th consecutive game and is thus Andrew Pan is the 2010 Australian U12 Champion!!! Congratulations!!! Joshua Behar also won and is in second placing with 8/10 and Stuart Mason is third with 7/10. And it looks like we will have an exciting last round fight for second placing since Joshua is playing Stuart. Ari Dale plays Joshua Devarajh and can get third if he wins and Stuart loses. Stuart needs to draw at least with Joshua, who also only need to draw to get second. I hope that is clear!
Peter Wallmueller and Ethan Lim are leading the race for the U10 title both with 5.5/10. But Jamie-Lee Guo and Noah Gong are only half-point behind with 5/10. Peter is playing Sasha Parsons and Ethan Lim plays Joshua Walker while Jamie-Lee is playing Noah. This means that Jamie-Lee and Noah both need to win while Peter and Ethan also need to win to go clear first or tie first with each other. If Peter and Ethan draw their games and either Jamie-Lee and Noah wins, there will be a three-way play-off. Theoretically there is a big bunch on 4.5/10 who can also tie for first but only in the unlikely event that Peter and Ethan lose and Jamie-Lee and Noah draw their games.
Things get murkier as we move through the divisions. In the U18, Bobby Cheng was held to a draw by IM-elect James Morris. Andrew Brown won defeating Eugen Schon. This means Andrew (8.5/10)is within half-a-point of Bobby (9/10). The others are too far behind to catch these two. Tomorrow in the final round Bobby faces Samuel Dalton while Andrew is paired with James. In the U16, James (7/10) is leading with Eugene (6.5/10) half-a-point behind. However, John Papantoniou, Anton Smirnov and Alastair Cameron are only a further point behind on 6/10. This means if James loses, Eugene draws and John, Anton or Alastair wins, there will be a four way-tie and play-off. Why, because John is playing against Alastair tomorrow, Anton faces Yuan Yi and Eugene gets a game with Samuel Grigg.
In the U14, it is similarly complicated. Anton is leading with Chen PengYu close behind on 5.5/10. Then there is Vincent Horton on 5/10. However, Alex Stahnke, though listed as having 5/10 has Rd 9 result (game against Michael Chan) missing. Again, if Anton loses, PengYu draws and Vincent wins, there will be a four way-tie and play-off. PengYu gets Fedja Zulfic, Vincent faces Sebastian Jule and Alex is paired against Kevin Tan. [Disclaimer: Obviously Alex's (and possibly Michael's) results could affect this prognosis.]

2010 NSW Australia Day Weekender_Day 1
Similar to last year, in the sweltering heat of a Sydney summer day, around 73 keen chess players forego a day at the beach for the comfort of an airconditioned room at the Norths Leagues Club in Cammeraygal for the 2010 NSW Australia Day Weekender. Ten juniors were part of the chess battlers.
The results for Rds 1-4 (with one or two omissions in Rd 4 since I left before all the games were finished).

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Rd 9_Results
It looks like the higher rated players are making their move back into medal/title contention with Rd 9 in the U18. IM-elect James Morris and Eugene Schon won their games to go to joint third. Bobby won his 8th consecutive game to lead with 8.5/9 and Andrew brown won as well to keep pace in second placing with 7.5/9. But it looks increasingly hard for Andrew to catch up to Bobby. James and Eugene are now leading the race for the U16 title. Not sure about the U14 title since the result of Micahel Chan vs Alex Stahnke has not been posted. If either one won, that person is leading the U14 together with Chen PengYu. If they drew, then PengYu leads the U14.
In the U12 Open, Andrew Pan won his 9th consecutive game to lead with 9/9!!! His compatriot Joshua Behar dropped a second game losing to Callum Gray but Joshua is still second on 7/9. I guess the race is only for second placing now since the U12 title is almost a foregone conclusion. Jamie Lee Guo won to get back to contention for the U10 title. Ethan Lim lost to dropped to half-point behind Jamie-Lee (together with David Cannon and Peter Wallmueller). In any event, Ethan Lim is leading the U8 together with two brothers, Rowan and Kevin Willathgamuwa. So it seems the excitement is in the U10 and U8 races.
In the U18 Girls, Abbie Kanagarajah won again to maintain her lead with 6.5/7 and Leteisha Simmonds also won to keep pace with 6/7. Megan Setiabudi is third with 5/7. It looks like Abbie is leading for the U18 title and Leteisha settling for the lead in the U16 title with Megan leading in the U14 race. (Note: All three are actually registered in the U14 division.)
In the U12 Girls, a similar story to the U12 Open with Savithri Narenthran posting a picket fence score of 7/7 to lead the U12. Grace Alvares won to keep within a point of Savithri. As mentioned previously, these two girls meet in the last round, Rd 9, the decider!!! In the U10 it looks like Kashish Christian is very close to clinching the title with 4/7. Her two rivals are two pints adrift.

7 Charlotte Dilnutt 0-1 Caroline Shan

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Rd 9
Tomorrow is Round 9 in the Australian Juniors after today's 2nd rest day. It is the home stretch, only three more games between the players and the coveted titles.
Tomorrow is also the Australia Day Weekender (Sat and Sun) in Sydney to be held at Norths. I will be there the whole day since my son is playing. It has also been forecasted that temperatures will reach the early 40s. I am glad to be indoors in the air-conditioned room. However, it will also mean that I am unable to provide the Interim Results since I do not have internet access. (Must get one of those prepaid wireless but just wondering how expensive they are to run?) You can head towards ChessChat (here) where you can keep up with the games and results.
I will update once I get home in the evening. Since it is a weekender, there is no prep to do with my son.

Tomorrow, Friday 22nd January is Problem solving competition and the Lightning tournament. Otherwise it is Rest day.
As stated in previous blog, it looks like Bobby Cheng is ahead of Andrew Brown by one point with John Papantoniou a further half-point behind (and the leader for U16). Then there is a bunch on joint fourth. There is also a three way tie for the U14 between Alex Stahnke, Chen PengYu and Michael Chan. In the U12 barring any force majeure or novus actus interveniens, Andrew Pan is heading towards the U12 title with the speed of the Shinkanzen followed by Joshua Behar. In the U10 it is Ethan Lim, Peter Wallmueller and David Cannon leading on 4.5/8 with Jamie-Lee Guo and Yu ShuQi chasing hard with 4/8. If Ethan Lim is eligible for the U10, then it is Noah Gong and Rowan Willathgamuwa leading the U8 with 4/8.
In the Girls, Abbie is leading by half-a-point (5.5/6). This means Leteisha (5/6) is leading the Girls U16/U14. That means that Megan Setiabudi (4.5/6) is in line for the U14 title. Savithri is leading the U12 with a perfect 100% of 6/6 chased by Grace Alvares on 5/6. If Grace A. can overcome Denise Lim in Rd 8, then there will be a battle for the title in the last round since Savithri is scheduled to play Grace in Rd 9. This leaves Kashish leading the U10 and will be paying her main rivals in Rds 7 and 9. Since there is only one entrant for the U8, I don't think the title would be awarded.

The greatest chess player (ever?) speaks his mind ......
To take a break from the Australian Juniors, I thought I will alert my readers to an interview conducted by Malaysian Edwin Lam with Garry Kasparov who is now better known as Magnus Carlsen's coach. The interview is here (on Chessbase).
Some excerpts as concern juniors and chess:
Some excerpts as concern juniors and chess:
Looking back at your own experience, and we see how kids these days start chess at a very young age, some as young as four and five, do you think is this a little too young, given that you started chess only at the age of seven?
I don’t think that it is too young or too late to start learning the game. Instead, it is a question on the goal or the objective of learning the game. I believe chess can play a very important role in a child’s education as it can help to improve their vision of things around them. Most of them, in fact 99.9% of them, will not play chess later in life. But, it is still very helpful for chess to be included in their general education curriculum. If the child shows interest in chess at the age of four or five, then fine. I believe that you have to help kids – you have to guide them – but, you cannot force them to do something they don’t like. For instance, my son doesn’t want to play chess. He has no interest and there is nothing that I can I do about it. He learnt chess when he was five or six and showed no special interest. He did not demonstrate any passion for it. While we play an important role of trying to guide kids to not be under the heavy influence of modern, mindless games, we must also understand the limitations of our interference. It’s about finding the golden balance of how to influence them without being too nasty and causing a counter reaction. This is true in any form of human relations, be it in a working team or in a father and son relationship.
In your opinion, can a less talented individual still succeed in chess, if he or she has the utmost passion in the game and a detailed plan to get there? This is something which is close to my heart and as foreshadowed, I will blog at a later date, but I am glad that we have the former world champion stressing the importance of hard work in success, not just in chess but in other areas and fields of endeavour. A second important point made (from the first excerpt) is the importance of respecting the child's choice, either to pursue chess or not to pursue chess. So it seems the chess genes were not transmitted to next Kasparov generation.
I had written in my book, How Life Imitates Chess, that working hard is also part of an individual’s talent. Sometimes, I find it hard to understand what it means when someone said, “Oh he or she is talented, but lazy”. To me, this simply showed that there is a big gap in the person’s character. Working hard is a form of talent – it is in fact, an important element of the person’s talent. By not working hard, how can your natural gift become real diamonds? So, that is why I think working hard is sometimes just as important to having a talent. Of course, I must admit that it will be difficult for someone without a huge talent to be a world champion. But, you can still go very high up and achieve a lot, even with limited talent. Of course, when I said limited talent, please do not get confused with the term. People can get really confused as talent can mean anything, you know. Being number one in your school also requires some talent. Being number one in the world also requires talent, but these are very different forms of talent. That said, I am a great proponent of the concept that the ability to work hard is a unique talent and if you can work hard and if you can spend the long hours and if you can concentrate on the goal and if you can make detailed plans, you could still be ahead of your competitor even if you are less talented or less gifted in chess or anything else simply because he or she is not as good in organizing their work.

2010 Australian Juniors Chess Championships_Rd 7 Interim Results
I have been visiting the NSWJCL Two-Day Tournament at Lidcombe. Numbers are down and at the end of the first day, Clive Ng is leading defeating Peter Yang in Rd 6.
Onto the interim results in Rd 7 of the Australian Juniors. (BTW I get the results from following the chat at the ChessChat "Shoutbox" in case anyone is wondering ...... but then I do wonder how many people actually reads this when I updates ...... sign of online blogging paranoia ......)
[AEST 6:15 pm]
U18 Open
Michael Chan defeated Joshua Bishop.
Eugene Schon defeated Sebastian Jule.
James Morris defeated Ben Encel.
Andrew Brown defeated Alex Stahnke.
Marcus Breytag drew with Choong Yita.
Bobby Cheng defeated Alastair Dyer to got to 6.5/7.
Sam Griggs defeated Anton Smirnov.
Yuan Yi defeated Anthony Milton.
Fedja Zulfic defeated Ding YiLun.
John Papantoniou defeated Sam Dalton to stay in touch with Bobby and Yi.
U12 Open
Andrew Pan defeated Ethan Derwent and still on 100%. Looks unstoppable now.
Ethan Lim drew with Punala Kiripitige.
Callum Gray defeated Jamie-Lee Guo. Hmmmmm! may have a bearing on medal chances.
Joshua Behar defeated Lachlan Cameron to be in sole second placing.
U12 Girls
Savithri Narenthran defeated Helen Pretorius.
Upset: Zalia Lai defeated Denise Lim.
U18 Girls
Abbie Kanagarajah defeated Joanne Mason taking a half-point lead since Megan Setiabudi drew with Leteisha Simmonds.
Natasha Bortsova defeated Caroline Shan.
Foreshadowing tomorrow's Game of the Day (Rd 8):
Bobby Cheng vs Yuan Yi. If Yi manages to defeat Bobby then there may be a number of juniors on equal first.
However, as Chief Arbiter IA Dr Charles Zworestine pointed out, most of the leaders have played each other but have yet to play IM-elect James Morris (who btw is not having the best tournament of his life but then he is still young ......). So, James could end up being the king-maker !!??.
Will post full results when it is available.
